Dig This: An Herb Garden

Every time I bought herbs at the grocery store or was about to finish preparing a dish only to realize I was missing, say, basil....I would swear to myself that I would plant an herb garden. This happened over and over. Until. I found a Bar Harbor Cedar kitchen garden. Now, I'm growing basil, mint, cilantro, strawberries, tomatoes, chive, thyme, lavender and parsley.
The cedar, has no chemicals...so none can leach into the soil. There are also accessories you can add, such as, a potting shelf, a side table and a potting lid, so that you can cover it in the winter or use it as a serving table.

And, now, I'm never out of herbs!

Do you have a kitchen garden, grow your own herbs or produce? It's a lot easier than I had imagined.

Not yet but you make it sound so easy! May have to pop over to your your for a cup of basil for my pesto... We've been thinking of adding herb potting kits to the website and you just convinced to do so! Happy weekend, Elizabeth!

What a fun idea. Something doable. We have a big garden and just this year added a "herb department". So far its been really easy to maintain and there is nothing like going out to your garden instead of the supermarket to get whatever herb you need.
Basil and rosemary are my favorites.

Your garden grows beautifully, Elizabeth! I can smell the fragrance of fresh herbs from here. I do have some herbs on our back porch - rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint and chives. No basil since an unfortunate slug incident, though!
Have a happy weekend! XOXO

What a great idea.....love it! I vowed to plant a big garden this year, the closest I got was buying some gloves (still with the price tag on them I might add)...clearly other things took front seat. But next year, its the first thing I hope to start in April. This however is great because anyone could do it, and you have all you need right..nothing like fresh herbs, happy planting Elizabeth and have a great weekend:)

Hi Elizabeth,

I always look forward to your posts but up to now, have been quiet.

I know that this is a little late, but as I am just returning from vacation, have been catching up on my favorite blogs...

I just have to thank you for your post re. Ted Kennedy Watson. I read your post right AFTER we had returned from a family vacation to Seattle/Victoria B.C.! I was SO disappointed that I hadn't stopped in his store while in Pike Place Market, completely my kind of store from the looks of things....

The good news is, I was able to put together a really great Watson Kennedy thank you gift to our hosts via phone/email---that Ted helped me select from their online site! I couldn't have done it without your heads up re. Ted and his stores. You are right, he was a delight to work with and I look forward to his book coming out in 2014! It feels so great to thank friends with things that I know they will enjoy and Watson Kennedy was wonderful to work with!

All my thanks and Happy Summer!
Mary

What a sweet planter!
Love that it has a lid,
too, for the winter.

We have two built in
planter boxes on our
deck and I fill them with
herbs each year. One is
more savory, with basil,
thyme, parsely, etc. and
the other is more sweet ~
French lavender, lemon
verbena, nastursiums and
mint.

Have a lovely weekend,
Elizabeth!

Hello, Elizabeth -
Divine!! I love your herb garden. Pinch back the mint and basil so they will be fuller and not so leggy. The cedar will silver beautifully and, look fantastic with your house colors. Have a wonderful weekend :-)

Elizabeth,

Your herb garden is lovely!! What a great idea. I have struggled with herbs.. Our weather is too cold and grey in the PNW. When I bring them inside, they dry out. I wonder if this would help? I spend so much money on those little herb containers. I've tried freezing them and they never taste as good as fresh.

Great photographs!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Lovely herb garden:-) I planted one this year too, after two days of rainfall, a whole family of slugs threw a party in my planters, a sprinkle of slug pellets later and the problem was solved..

I love your herb garden Elizabeth!! I have an herb garden as well, not as pretty as yours, but I love being able to grab some from the backyard to use in a recipe!
My favorite thing about growing basil is that after you cut it off you can put it in water and let it start to root and grow more!!

Have a fab weekend Elizabeth!!

Hi Elizabeth,
Your herb garden is charming. I have them growing in a container right outside my kitchen door–we use them all the time. I love to add them to a fresh salad or even things on the grill.
